Impaired drivers pay In Provincial Court in Princeton on February 12, drivers charged with over .08 blood alcohol faced the new stiffer penalties.
Sean M. Fox was apprehended near Princeton on September 1, 2008, while speeding on Blackmine Road.
Although he had no prior impaired driving convictions, he had a lengthy record of other driving convictions.
When he was charged with impaired driving, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles seized his driver’s licence. Fox pleaded guilty to the current charge, and will be prohibited from driving for the coming year. In addition, he must pay a $1,000 fine.
Patrick E. Hurley drove into the ditch near Popkum, B.C. on October 21, 2008. He was taken for a breath test, and readings of .280 and .270 were obtained. He entered a guilty plea in Princeton, and due to the high readings, he is prohibited from driving for 18 months and will pay a $1,200 fine.
Dog dislike ends in court
In Provincial Court in Princeton on February 12, Richard S. Derish entered a guilty plea to a charge of assault.
On January 19, 2009, a woman residing at the same motel was walking her dog. Derish approached her, complaining about the dog. He pushed her down in the snow and attempted to hold her down, but she was able to get away.
Judge G. Sinclair sentenced the 42 year old Princeton resident to nine months probation. He is to have no contact with the woman, and is to write a letter of apology to her.
Local man pleads to drug charge
Robert L. Gold, age 48, of Princeton, appeared in Provincial Court on February 12 to plead guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled substance. Police apprehended Gold on another matter, and searched him following his arrest.
They found crystal meth and cocaine on him. He was ordered to pay a $250 fine and serve a nine month probation.
Man charged in brawl
Shaun Ortwein, of Princeton, appeared in Provincial Court on February 12 to plead guilty to a charge of causing a disturbance. Information provided to the court revealed that Ortwein was charged as a result of a brawl in a local watering hole.
On July 5, 2008, patrons of the establishment were watching a martial arts program on television. Some patrons from Princeton took exception to some from Prince George and and a brawl ensued, involving at least 20 people. Ortwein was charged as the instigator.
As Ortwein had a prior conviction for impaired driving, Judge Sinclair concluded alcohol was a problem. Ortwein was ordered to serve a 12 month probation with the conditions that he consume no alcohol, take counselling, and not enter any place where alcohol is sold. In addition, he must serve 16 hours of community service.
Girl scrap leads to court
A female youth appeared in court on February 12 to plead guilty to a charge of common assault.
Information presented in court indicated the victim of the assault had telephoned her mother to say some girls were bullying her. The mother went to the location and saw her daughter on the ground with three or four other girls there. One girl was hitting and kicking the victim.
The youth admitted the fight was about a boyfriend.
Judge G. Sinclair sentenced the youth to 12 months probation, 10 hours of community work service, and ordered her to write a letter of apology to the victim.
