COURT NEWS - March 16, 2006

TABBY GOES TO PROVINCIAL COURT

As Provincial Court prepared to come to order last Thursday morning in Princeton, a well-fed tabby made his way across the courtroom. The sheriff promptly removed the unwanted feline.

Showing the patience and persistence of an expert mouser, the tabby waited at the door of the courthouse until a person entered, and made his way up the stairs to the courtroom hallway. The sheriff removed him again.

By noon, the sheriff had removed the tabby five times.

A compromise was reached when court reconvened after lunch. The tabby made himself inconspicuous on the top step of the stairs and went to sleep.

The sheriff, having suffered many uncomplimentary remarks from police and lawyers about animal cruelty, left the sleeping tabby where he was.

DRIVER PLEADS GUILTY

In Provincial Court in Princeton on March 16, 35 year old Joseph Hebert pled guilty to an impaired driving charge.

Hebert was apprehended in a routine road check on March 5, 2005.

As Hebert had no prior offences, he was ordered to pay the minimum $600 fine and a $90 victim fine surcharge, and had his driving privileges denied for one year.

MAN CHANGES PLEA

A former Hedley resident stood trial in Provincial Court in Princeton on March 16. William Bowles, age 68, was in a Princeton pub on September 11 with his wife.

The waitress felt they had had enough and refused to serve them anything but water.

The couple left, and the waitress saw them enter a vehicle and start it.

She called 911 to report a possible impaired driver.

After hearing the evidence, Bowles changed his plea to guilty. He will appear in court in Penticton in September for sentencing. This allows Bowles time to clear up personal matters relating to the recent death of his wife.
