SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS CATCH THIEF
Bank technology provided the information that led to the conviction of Arthur Woolley, age 55, of Princeton. Woolley stood trial on June 15 in Provincial Court in Princeton.A Mr. Kurt Roberts complained that on June 11, 2004, he had lost his wallet at Woolley's apartment. It was found next day at a local liquor vendor.
Subsequently, he discovered a large sum missing from his bank account. He believed Woolley had taken his bank card and used it, because Woolley had stood behind him at the bank machine while Roberts withdrew money. Woolley could have seen the PIN and memorized it for later use.
Testimony from the bank manager revealed that the use of a card and bank surveillance cameras were coordinated so that, when a card is used, the card number can be traced to the correct time the photo was taken.
Cst. M. Stus viewed surveillance photos taken on June 11 and testified as to the identity of persons shown using Roberts' bank card. One of those people was Woolley.
Although Woolley had claimed innocence, he changed his plea after a short recess following the Crown's witnesses.
On June 16, Woolley was sentenced. He has a long criminal record involving numerous theft convictions, the last of which was in 2000.
Woolley will serve 30 days house arrest, with curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., followed by 11 months probation. He is to have no contact with Roberts, but must repay the $560 he took from Roberts' account.
