WHERE ARE YOU ON GAME NIGHTS?
EDITORIAL - January 16, 2007
We've discovered Princeton's best kept secret is not the year round recreation and clean air.
No sirree! Princeton's best kept secret is the Princeton Posse. That's right, we're talking about the KIJHL Junior B Hockey Club that is well into their fifth (and so far, best) season at Princeton Arena.
Sure, the first couple of years were rough.
The boys were certainly performing on ice in those days, and occasionally a hockey game would break out. But that's all in the past.
The 2006/07 Princeton Posse is an amazing machine with many parts and when all parts are finely tuned, there's no telling what will happen.
For example, this year's schedule has been - in a word - crappy. There have been far too many one game weekends and far too many weekends on the road with long breaks between home games. It's not the teams fault, but the schedule hasn't helped fill seats at Princeton Arena.
Those who do show up (the numbers are increasing) are witnessing some mighty fine hockey.
The first week in January featured a grueling four games in five days. Even the biggest Posse fans shook their heads in wonder how much this would beat up the boys who were struggling at the time to hold on to last place in their division.
The Posse sailed through the week pulling six points out of three wins. They narrowly missed an overtime tie/loss/win point by seconds in the remaining game. The team seemed to get stronger with each game.
Maybe that's what the Posse needed. A tight week of games to test their stamina. There's no doubt it worked.
All they have to do now is sell the product to fans. We're talking fans who used to go and either gave up on the team or got tied of the fights.
The Posse contains a great bunch of guys, and since the Hockey Club isn't telling you this, we will: the players who attend PSS are Honour Roll students. Some of the players have part-time jobs in town. A few attend church.
The one thing they all have in common is they really like Princeton and are proud to represent the community in a Posse jersey.
The least we can do is show up for a few games to show our appreciation.
