LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,
Re: National Volunteer Week, April 19 to April 25, 2009
During National Volunteer Week, April 19 25th, the Canadian Cancer Society would like to extend thanks and celebrate the contribution of our volunteers. This dedicated group of ambassadors, who come from every age group and walk of life, are the very heart of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Because of their tireless efforts the Society is turning fear into hope for people with cancer, and hope into reality.
With more than 20,000 volunteers and another 22,000 event participants, our network extends into hundreds of communities across British Columbia and the Yukon. We can proudly say that throughout the Interior you will find volunteers, donors and event participants who are committed to supporting the work of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Volunteers provide caring assistance by delivering personal and practical support programs to people with cancer to enhance their quality of life. Some volunteers are working hard on important cancer prevention initiatives. And others fundraise tirelessly for outstanding cancer research that is saving lives and improving treatment options.
To all those volunteers we say, keep caring, keep giving and keep believing in the outstanding work of the Canadian Cancer Society.
With sincerely thanks,
- Lyn David McMullen, Interior Region Volunteer President - Canadian Cancer Society
Dear Editor;
As we are on the count down to Election Day, it has become very apparent that you need a strong stomach to make it through the NDP infomercials. They are like repeats of a bad movie that was not worth paying to see. Then there are those commercials regarding the school system in our Province. "Give me a break already"; flashes through my mind every time I see one.
I am a parent of a Special Needs Student and since the Liberals have been our Government my son has received increased funding and a fulltime aid. It bothers me that the NDP continue to point fingers at the Government over how funds are spent in the school system, when in fact it's our school boards who determine how the funds are spent.
I also remember the last time the NDP were in power, those cranes in the lower mainland that were busy,
busy. STOPPED! As did all production in our Province; investors and workers left taking their dollars with them. If you were a student in BC and had special needs; you were put in a corner because there was no funding given to the school boards for full time aids and extra equipment.
Every time I hear a promise or see the fingers pointing in one of those 'Oh it is true' ads for the NDP I am reminded of the story about
'Chicken Little'; you know where she claims the "sky is falling". The sky was not falling in the story and it is not now. We need strong leaders, visionaries that see past right now and a strong future. We need a Government that can stay focused and on track. We do not need a repeat of the 90's and the nightmare that came with the NDP in power or the smoke and mirrors show they used to get there. Are there some rocky times ahead?
You bet there is going to be, and it is important that we are lead by those who have proven they can and have cleaned up the mess that the NDP left behind not so long ago.
I know when I go to the poll I am voting to ensure my children and grandchildren will have a prosperous future.
Sincerely;
- Shaely (Wilbur) Endicott, Dawson Creek, BC
