LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
- August 15, 2006

Dear Editor:

This letter is my own opinion and not an endorsement of any political party's viewpoint. And, dear editor, I'd like to share it with you and your readers.

Imagine if you will that you'd never heard or seen a newscast since 1947. Pretend that you'd just recently developed an interest in the present middle-eastern conflict. Now, place a Palestinian beside an Israeli. You would not be able to identify them by nationality.

No one could, because they're blood brothers, traced back to Abraham. The only discernible difference between these brothers is their religions, and religion is only in the mind.

Now, if you're still reading this and wondering why these two religious brothers keep fighting, familiarize yourself with a 1947 map of Palestine and compare it with a 2006 map of Israel.

Hey, what happened? What was Palestine in 1947 is now known as Israel. One religion now rules and enslaves the other religion, with America's entire arsenal at its disposal, while the other has gone underground and fights back with sticks and stones.

What the United Nations, our governments and our media do not seem to recognize, is that the conflict will never end until the Palestinians regain their historical homeland.

Much of our news is slanted in favour of Israel. Who would've known that it's the Palestinians who are being wronged? No one would from listening to our newscasts-----and least of all, Harper, Day, Toews, O'Connor, and company.

Sincerely,
HPToews, Princeton

Dear Editor;

If your doctor is planning surgery for you this year, the Penticton Regional Hospital (PRH) is well equipped and ready for you.

So why is it; that we are always asking for donations for new equipment? The truth is, equipment ages, becomes outdated and sometimes even obsolete. Our role at the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation is to continue to raise funds to provide the best and newest technology available as equipment is needed.

This year we would like to purchase two Laparoscopic Endo Cameras for the operating rooms at PRH. The cost for each piece is $76,823. We must raise a total of $153,646.

Laparoscopic Endo Cameras help to examine the internal organs of the abdomen using a Laparoscope. Laparoscopic surgery is often called minimal access surgery or key-hole surgery.

During the surgical operation pictures are sent back up to a monitor in the operating room for the medical staff to help determine any problems.

This amazing technology will be used in PRH and paid for by donations from donors from all over our region.

If you would like to make a donation to the Penticton Regional Hospital but aren't able to consider a cash gift at this time, you might want to consider an alternative option.

You've heard the saying that most of us are richer after our death than we were when we were alive so why not consider designating some of your assets through your Will. When writing or updating your Will ask your legal advisor to have either a percentage % (or the sum of $___) from the residue of your estate directed to the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation for the Penticton Regional Hospital.

It might be more convenient for you to give a specific piece of property like a home, securities or other financial assets and the tax benefits to you are often quite substantial. Even a small percentage of your estate can be worth a great deal of money when you consider the value of your residence and your investments.

In our case the generosity of people giving through their estates has allowed South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation to purchase literally millions of dollars worth of equipment for the Penticton Regional Hospital over the past 25 years.

To learn more about making these types of charitable gifts, contact your insurance advisor, tax, financial or legal advisor or contact us for more information.

- Janice Perrino, CFRE, Executive Director South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation
