To The Editor;

RE: Opening Day at PSS

Back to the comfort of the three-season routine starting this Tuesday. A reminder that students are in school for 2 hours on opening day, from 10:00 AM UNTIL 12:00 Noon.

Bus schedules will be adjusted accordingly. We are excited about the new school year and are looking forward to working with all of our students to help them achieve to the best of their ability. To that end, we have established a yearlong school-wide goal of learning problem solving skills in both academic and social contexts.

What equipment is required the first day? It's pretty basic, a binder with paper and a writing implement. Teachers will inform students of their course specific requirements in the first few days. For example, a gym strip for PE or a specific type of calculator for a science or math course.

Are there any money requirements? YES. We have a $15.00 activity fee that goes towards student council and other student related activities. A $5.00 fine arts fee that helps with the cost of the wonderful performers that come to our school. And finally there is a $7.00 charge for a lock $5.00 of which is refunded following grade 12. This is a total of $27.00. Yearbooks can be ordered now at a cost of $35.00. They go up to $40.00 later in the year.

We sold out the last 2 years so if you want one it is better to order early. Our fridge magnet school calendar will be sent home in September but a few dates that are coming up quickly are Picture Day on September the 10th and Meet the Teacher Night on the 18th starting at 6:30 PM.

In addition our first PAC meeting is on the 24th at 7:00 PM. All parents are welcome, and we value your input into the policies and procedures of our school and our school district. Good luck to last year's grads and a reminder to pick up your Passport to Education booklets that can be redeemed for dollars for your continuing post-secondary education.

Please feel free to give the school a call if you have any questions. See you on the 4th!

Dear Editor,

I'm writing to all newspapers in British Columbia to ensure that as many people in BC as possible are aware of the consequences of not calling our organization, BC One Call, before digging or excavating. BC One Call provides a free service to request information relating to the location of underground utilities to anyone contemplating ground disturbances.

BC One Call allows the homeowner or contractor to make one call to 1-800-474-6886 or *6886 on your cellular to our call center where we forward the request to our members. The utility owners then respond directly back to the person/company requesting the information within 3 days.

BC One Call is only part of the larger process of digging safely without damaging underground structures. And the consequences of not calling us or digging safely put the public, the workers and the environment in harm's way.

There are strict rules governing how to dig around underground utilities and those are the responsibility of the excavating person(s). We work together with utilities, pipeline experts, and organizations such as the BCCGA (BC Common Ground Alliance) that provide information on best practices for excavating.

I encourage everyone to Call before you dig, follow safe digging practices and be vigilant in protecting public safety and our environment.
