LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
- September 12, 2006
Dear Editor;
No, I don't hate foreigners. I try very hard not to let hatred of anyone spoil my life. So, should we hate others because our government is having our coastal ferry fleet built in Germany?
Of course not! Are foreigners to be faulted for building a new Fraser River crossing between Maple Ridge and Ft. Langley? Of course not!
Winning that bid is probably only German engineering and entrepreneurship. Or could it be that the German firm can build bridges for less money because of cheaper imported labor? Could it also be that our Liberal government in Victoria doesn't give a damn about the workers of this province?
If you answered in the affirmative to the last two questions, you are probably very close to the truth.
In spite of the booming economy, Victoria insists on farming our jobs out to the lowest bidder, no matter where the bids come from. They do not seem to grasp the fact that foreign companies profits expand the economies of their country, not ours.
In spite of the ever-increasing gap between the haves and have-nots and the disappearance of the middle-class, Liberal policies are designed to exacerbate that situation.
If the present government hadn't destroyed the previous governments apprenticeship program there'd be little need to import foreign workers. If the present ferry-building program had been awarded to BC companies, and if all bridge-building projects were awarded to Canadian companies with homegrown trades-people, it'd be much easier for British Columbians to weather the next economic collapse.
What collapse, I hear you ask? My answer in the form of a question is, are you not familiar with Canada's boom and bust history? You don't have long to wait.
Sincerely, HPToews, Princeton
