LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
- October 21, 2008

Dear Editor;

On Monday, October 6th Canada Post issued a new stamp to encourage all Canadians to show their support for the one in five Canadians who will suffer from mental illness.

The Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health will support front-line organizations serving patients, consumers and caregivers.

It will focus on eliminating the stigma of mental illness, raising awareness of how it affects the lives of all Canadians and ensuring mental health issues take their rightful place in our country's health and social policies.

Each book of ten stamps will have a $1.00 surcharge that will fund the Foundation.

The Mental Health stamp was designed by Paul Haslip of HM&E Design Communication and uses a photograph by Nigel Dickson. The stamp reflects the Kirby Report "Out of the shadows at last" which has led to the creation of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

The Mental Illness Information, Family and Peer Support Centre, operated by the BC Schizophrenia Society - Penticton Branch, at 205 Martin Street, serves the South Okanagan Similkameen. Our programs present education and support to families/friends and persons in recovery from a mental illness and provide community education to combat stigma and discrimination.

We salute Canada Post for choosing mental health as its cause of choice.

Our Penticton office can be reached at (250) 493-7338 if you'd like more information about our programs.

- Sharon Evans, President
Penticton Branch BC Schizophrenia Society

Dear Editor;

I would like to thank all those who took the time to vote in the federal election.

It was especially heartwarming to be able to participate in all-candidates' meetings at our schools and see young people interested in the political process, thanks to the hard work of their teachers.

I and my staff will continue to make every attempt to listen to and work hard on behalf of all our constituents. We are asked to tackle many issues of concern to our communities such as passports, health care, the environment, food security, border issues and childcare.

I look forward to continuing this inclusive approach during my next term as your Member of Parliament.

In closing, I would like to thank all of those committed people who worked so hard on my campaign.

Our combined efforts paid off.

Sincerely,
Alex Atamanenko, MP
BC Southern Interior

To The Editor,

Our Canadian election is over but more dubious is our neighbor's - the U.S.A. Their influence on our country and Princeton's exports and tourism will affect our jobs, education, health care, pensions, and the Canadian troops dangling in Afghanistan.

The facial expressions of contempt and deafness towards Sen. Obama on Sen. McCain's face during the third and final Presidential debate says it all. Sen. McCain is to be Captain by 'divine right' and Sen. Obama remains the oarsman of the 21st century 'Roman Man Of War -- The U.S.S. America.'

Sen. McCain's strategy of 'Power At Any Price' has a tendency to bring a curse on the head of the perpetrator as it has done with Pres. G. W. Bush. and the U.S.A.

Just amazing to see how these Christians love one another in this era of 'In No One Do We Trust.'

We can't do much about it, but hope the leaders of both countries would implement a golden saying by an old wise 14th B.C. century Chinese grandmother - 'Stay home --- Mind own business --- Fix house.'
Regards,

Joe Schwarz, Princeton
