HORSES, ARTS AND MUSIC FILLS WEEKEND
With no less than thirteen different activities scheduled, Canada Day Weekend in Princeton was a busy three days at local businesses, on local streets, in hotels and campgrounds and on the highways.
The weekend started Friday afternoon with horse racing at Sunflower Downs. A total of nine races were scheduled and unexpected delays stretched the event well into the evening, but racing fans didn't seem to mind.
Saturday started with the annual Lions Club Pancake Breakfast and Duck Race. Other events that started that morning included the Mixed Golf Tournament at Princeton Golf Club, the Men's Fastball Tournament at Memorial Park which saw a total of seven teams entered and the beginning of the second annual Sounds of Our Heritage Music Festival which featured two complete days of musical entertainment at two downtown venues and highlighted talent made entirely of local musicians.
There was the annual two day Art Show hosted by Vermilion Artists in a small section of the former Goldion Restaurant, which got cramped at times when foot traffic was high.
Shirley's Arts & Crafts hosted an Art Show and Sale featuring Nathan Pinsent, well-known to many local residents. Pinsent now lives in northern Saskatchewan.
Princeton Rotary Club hosted their annual Parade with this year's theme "The Great Outdoors." Over 50 entries were registered and with a few delays the parade ran just about an hour - one of the longest parades in recent memory.
In the Commercial Category Mac's Auto Parts won First Place with Booster Juice Second and Valley First Credit Union Third. In the Organizations Category Vermilion Trails Society won First Place with Princeton & District Community Services Second and Princeton Fish & Game Club Third. In the Horse & Rider Category 24K Ranch was First with Princeton Rodeo Club Queen Second and Princeton Rodeo Club Third.
In the Car and Truck Category Basil Bottenfield's 1939 Ford (Rotary Club Youth Ambassador Candidate) won First Place with the Overwaitea Foods Convertible Second and Yellow Truck transporting the Lytton Ambassadors Third.
Overall Parade Winners were: First Place - Town of Vernon float, Second Place - Scarlette Belles (Red Hat Society) and Third Place - Princeton Fish & Game Club.
The Parade was followed by the Youth Ambassador Coronation Ceremonies at Riverside Centre where Miss Princeton Co-Gen Corporation Madison Johnston was named the 2007 Youth Ambassador. Joining her are Vice Ambassador Samantha Wasylenchuk (Miss Valley First Credit Union) and Friendship Ambassador Michelle Derkson (Miss Princeton Rotary Club).
Saturday ended with two dances - an 'under 19' Youth Ambassador Dance at Riverside Centre and the Racing Days 'adult dance' at Princeton Arena featuring Frame 313 and The Blackbirds.
Canada Day Sunday saw a continuation of the Vermilion Artists Art Show, the Sounds of Our Heritage Music Festival, Mixed Golf Tournament and Mens Fastball Tournament.
Canada Day Celebrations took place at Cenotaph Park with face painting, refreshments, speeches and cake.
Centennial Pool provided free swimming in the afternoon as part of the Canada Day Celebrations.
