PRINCETON CELEBRATES LIGHT-UP

Numerous Princeton merchants were swamped with shoppers last Friday night and all day Saturday as part of the annual Light-Up Celebration.

Although many of the shoppers were only interested in getting their Passports stamped in order to qualify for the huge Grand Prize Draw - a collection of local items worth over $3,000.00 - business was also brisk at many of the 35 participating businesses.

"We stamped a total of 192 Passports," says News Leader Owner/Publisher George Elliott.

"We really didn't know what to expect and were extremely impressed and equally amazed at the numbers."

The Grand Prize was won by Anne MacLellan of Princeton.

The downtown core was busy Friday night with shoppers and filled again Saturday for the Light-Up Parade, which attracted a total of 26 entries.

First in the Commercial Category went to Three Lakes Store with Second Place going to AP Guest Ranch.

In the Non-Commercial Category Similkameen Valley ATV Riders finished with First Place with Little Folks Nursery School earning Second.

The Best Overall Entry was Three Lakes Store.

Organizers will meet again soon to discuss what worked best with the promotion and work on fine tuning other parts for future events.

LIONS CELEBRATE 36 YEARS

Princeton Lions Club marked their 36th year of service with their annual Charter Night on November 25th in the Seniors Drop-In Centre.

The evening, which included a dinner, the induction of a new member and the presentation of many awards, started with an official welcome from the Town of Princeton.

Councillor Jim Manion kept it simple with a word of thanks.

"You can never say thank you enough to volunteers," he told Lions Club members.

"Thank you for your many contributions to our community." The guest speaker for the evening was Multiple District 19 Executive Secretary Treasurer Patty Allen from Bellingham, Washington.

Allen reviewed the past thirty-six years explaining that when most Lions Clubs start up it takes about six months to get fully functioning.

"Well, it took Princeton about five minutes." Allen said any winning team contains a number of elements and she pointed out that in thirty-six years, the Princeton club has shown they have those elements.

She also explained the significance of the Lions International logo, which features two lion's heads one facing to the left, or looking to the past, with the other one facing right looking to the future.

Allen commended the group for their many achievements.

"There's been hundreds of thousands of dollars that you've put back into your community with tremendous support from within and for your community."

The Princeton Lions Club held their first Charter Night on December 12, 1970 and Allen presented the Club with original documents related to that event to be put into the local Club archives.

"I congratulate you on celebrating thirty-six years and for all the money you have put into your community."

Zone Chairman, and Past President of the Princeton Club, Penny Lott participated in the induction ceremony of new member Darrell Alexandre which was followed by a series of award presentations.

The Secretary Excellence Award went to Sandy Harrop with Lions of the Year Award going to Nancy Houben. A Life Membership was presented to Charter Member John Sandness.
