PRINCETON LOOKS AT 5TH YOUTH YEAR

Princeton may have an "unprecedented" fifth year of Katimavik volunteers.

The Princeton Katimavik Committee met on May 2 with Pamela Lang, from B.C.'s Katimavik headquarters.

Despite having warned Princeton's committee last year that there would be no fifth year, Lang was back in town to evaluate Princeton's support for another year of Katimavik.

Many people attended the meeting. The group included representatives from Town Council, Museum Society, Fall Fair, Racing Days, Rodeo Club, Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists, Vermilion Trails Society and Princeton Exhibition Association, along with school principals and billet families.

They told Lang there would have been more people there if the meeting had been in the evening.

Lang heard nothing but overwhelming positive response to the suggestion Princeton might be approved for another year of Katimavik.

The only drawback to having Katimavik here for another year is lack of housing at this point. Katimavik must have a four bedroom or larger house with two bathrooms and all appliances. Anyone who is willing to rent to Katimavik for the coming year, beginning at the end of August, should contact Councillor Spencer Coyne, Chair of the local committee. A message can be left at Town Hall for him.

This commitment must be met by May 25.

In addition to finding a residence for Katimavik, the committee asked for letters of support and applications for being a work partner for Katimavik participants who do volunteer work for the various groups and schools.

At the May 2 Town Council meeting, Council voted to send a letter of support for having Katimavik here for a fifth year.

FIVE RUNNING IN YALE-LILLOOET RIDING

There are a total of five candidates declared in Yale-Lillooet Electoral District for the 38th Provincial General Election on May 17th.

The BC Liberal Party is represented by Lloyd George Forman of Boston Bar with Merritt resident Harry Lali of the New Democratic Party of BC.

Princeton resident Mike McLean is running for the Green Party of BC with Hope resident Dorothy-Jean O'Donnell of the People's Front and Arne Jensen Zabell, from Sunshine Valley, representing the Democratic Reform Party of BC.

The Princeton & District Chamber of Commerce will host an All-Candidates Forum in Princeton Legion Hall on Monday, May 9th starting at 7:00 PM.

The incumbent in Yale-Lillooet is Liberal Dave Chutter, who is not seeking re-election.

In 2001, he beat the NDP's Victor York with a 3-to-1 margin. Preceding Chutter was New Democrat Harry Lali, who won office in 1991 by unseating then-incumbent James Rabbitt of the Social Credit Party by 683 votes.

Rabbitt tried again in 1996 but was rebuffed by nearly twice as many votes. Rabbitt had been more fortunate a decade before, winning office by a 529 vote margin of the NDP's Howard McDiarmid.

Before that, the MLAs were New Democrat Bill Hartley (1963-1975) and Socred Tom Waterland (1975-1986).

In the last Provincial Election (2001), voter turnout in Yale-Lillooet was 69 percent which was just below the provincial average.

'LET'S PLAY' THIS WEEKEND IN PRINCETON

This is the weekend most country music fans have been waiting for: "Let's Play Princeton" - a two night country music concert will start this Friday evening at Princeton Airport.

Tickets have been selling briskly with prices for a two-day pass set at $60.00 + GST and a single day pass worth $30.00 + GST. Advance tickets are still available at Princeton Dairy Queen, Billy's Family Restaurant, Belaire Restaurant and Similkameen News Leader.

A large portion of the airport property will be transformed into a campsite with specific areas designated for tents and RV's. Camping is free at the concert site, but a small eco-fee will be applicable for clean-up costs.

The concert line up is nothing short of incredible. We've answered many phone calls where someone would ask us "Is Emerson Drive coming to Princeton, for real?" The answer, of course, is yes.

Gates will open on Friday, May 13th at 4:00 PM. The first performer is Princeton's Kristie McIvor.

The rest of Friday night's line up includes performances by Justine Stewart, Duane Steele and Tracie James. The concert should end around 10:30 PM the first night.

The second performance will start with gates opening at 4:00 PM on Saturday, May 14th.

First to hit the stage will be Cruzeros, followed by Justine Stewart and Ken McCoy.

Emerson Drive will start their performance at about 9:00 PM and wrap up the event at 10:30 PM.

Fans will have a special opportunity following the concert to actually meet the musicians and performers at a "Meet and Greet" event planned to start around 9:30 PM on Saturday, May 14th at Princeton Arena.

All weekend performers have made a commitment to attend the "Meet and Greet" to sign autographs and pose for photos.

The charge to attend this event is $20.00 at the door and there will be food and beverages available.

The "Meet and Greet" will feature a live performance by Russell Brewer until about 12:30 AM.

Well over 1,000 tickets have already been sold for the complete "Let's Play Princeton" concert series, which is a separate event from Princeton's Canadian Pro Rodeo, also taking place this weekend.

Volunteers are still required for a number of tasks as part of the concert. For more information on how you can get involved call John at (250) 295-7599 or visit the News Leader website at www.thenewsleader.ca.
