ARENA PLEASES OUTSIDE TEAMS

Community Director Lyle Thomas was pleased to report to Town Council on April 21 that a team slated to compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics is looking at Princeton's arena as a training facility.

They have not made a final decision at this time but are considering Princeton.

Thomas said the Trail Smoke Eaters recruitment camp was a success, and the Smoke Eaters were pleased with the 200 applicants. They had to turn away some of the applicants. Ordinarily, due to the location of Trail, the Smoke Eaters see fewer than 100 apply for the camp.

As Princeton is a more central location, there were a lot more players willing to turn out.

The Smoke Eaters were very pleased with Princeton's facilities, Thomas said, adding that he estimated $75,000 of outside money came to Princeton the weekend of the Smoke Eaters camp.

by Sharon Anderson

The Princeton Kokanee Summer Swim Club is sponsoring a Super Fish Swimming Clinic in June. Hosting the clinic is Kelly Stefanyshyn, a long time National team veteran and gold medalist at the Pan American Games.

The Kokanee Club eagerly anticipates hearing Stefanyshyn share her experiences.

Stefanyshyn represented Canada at the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Pan Pacific Championships, FISU World Student Games, and FINA World Cups. Enthusiastic club swimmers await the opportunity to swim with an athlete of Stefanyshyn's calibre.

The summer of 2008 is Denis Gutierrez-Ogrinc's first year as the Princeton Kokanee Summer Swim Club's head coach.

Denis is no newcomer to the sport; he participated as a provincial swimmer on four separate occasions, and was Princeton Kokanee's assistant coach the past two years.

May 2nd through May 4th sees Denis attending a Beyond the Pool - Focusing on the Future coaching conference in Vancouver.

Liam Donnelly, nationally respected coach and SFU's head coach is the keynote speaker. Denis will learn tools to develop life long athletes and hear sessions: Developing the Person, Not Just the Athlete; and Ten Things Kids Need to Learn Out of the Water.

Denis will return to Princeton with new workout ideas and team building strategies. If you are looking for a fun way to keep your kids active this summer, check out the Kokanee Summer Swim Club.
