SWIM CLUB DIVES INTO SEASON
The Kokanee Summer Swim Club is off to another exciting season with 56 swimmers already registered.
Swim coaches Jordan Hilton and Dennis Gutierrez-Ogrinc are grateful for a $2,000.00 "Jobs for Youth Grant" from Weyerhaeuser that has helped to employ them. They extend a big thank you to Jeff Larsen, unit manager of Weyerhaeuser.
The Kokanee Summer Swim Club (KSSC) is registered with the BC Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA) and swims competitively as part of the Okanagan Region. KSSC is a non-profit registered society and is dedicated to promoting and developing amateur swimming.
The club offers children the opportunity to develop their swimming skills and compete in local, regional and provincial meets. Swim club combines fun and challenges through individual and team perspectives.
The Princeton Centennial Pool was built in 1967 and is 25 yards long. Competitive swimming is now based on a 25 metre length, so unfortunately our pool is not eligible to hold swim meets.
However, despite the fact that our club starts one month later than the other clubs in our region (as it is outdoors) and that our kids train in a 25 yard pool instead of a 25 metre pool, we still manage to earn places on the Okanagan Regional Team which goes on to compete in the Provincial meet.
We are very proud of our swimmers and our coaches!
JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
The Princeton Golf Club and RV Park proudly hosted the 2006 Junior Club Championship on June 10th and 11th. The golfers braved the British Open like conditions and all completed their rounds through sunshine, wind, and rain.
Jonas Montgomery and Vian Maritz battled through 36 holes in a very close race. Jonas birdied holes 8 and 9 on Saturday to take a slight lead heading into Sunday's round. Vian put pressure on Jonas with a birdie on hole 17 but could not close the gap further. In the end, Jonas Montgomery emerged victorious and was presented the prestigious Laurie Currie Memorial trophy as the Junior Club Champion for 2006.
On other holes, Bryce Markin, Nick Yee, and Colton Williams were all involved in a tight contest for third place. Colton chipped in on hole 8 for a birdie while Nick sank a thirty foot putt on hole 9 to try to pressure Bryce.
However, Bryce's steady play resulted in him capturing third place. Keaton Phillips made some great chip shots in order to keep his place on the leaderboard secure. Keaton Ashley's smooth swing was up against Shawn Hearty's long drives as they posted identical scores for the tournament.
Joe Powell hit some tremendous shots over the course of the weekend but could not gain ground on the leaders. Rhett Ortwein putted well all weekend and along with Michael White who improved on his Saturday score by 25 strokes on Sunday let it be known that they will be a force to reckon with in future championships.
Congratulations to all the juniors for a great weekend of golf and fun.
We hope to see you all again next year. The Princeton Golf Club would like to thank Rob Fulton, Chris Wahlroth, and the staff at the Pro Shop for organizing a fantastic tournament.
We would also like to thank Princeton Light and Power for their donation to the juniors. Also, the parents and volunteers who walked all 36 holes with the competitors. Finally, a special thank you goes out to Sonja Currie who donated the trophies for the event in memory of Laurie Currie, the Golf Club President who was a proud supporter of junior golf and made the dream of an 18 hole golf course a reality for all of us to enjoy.
