Posse beat Fernie on overtime

Curling Club

Valley First Princeton Posse welcomed Fernie Ghostriders to their first visit to the Similkameen this season on Friday, October 19th. On paper both teams looked evenly matched and the first period flew by quickly with no scoring and plenty of fast paced hockey action.

The second period was much the same as the first except Fernie managed to sneak the puck past Posse goalie Andrew Walsh at 18:56.

The third period saw both teams looking a little tired until 11:10 when Brett Van Riper slipped Logan Johnston the puck and he blasted it from the blue line to tie the game at one apiece. The score lit up the Posse and 40-seconds later Kyle L'Arrivee, a returning veteran in his third game back in a Posse jersey, won the face-off in Fernie territory, fed it back Cody Sutherland at the blue line who's line drive sent the puck sailing into the top stick side corner for the go ahead goal.

Fernie called a time out immediately after the score and came out blazing tying the game up at 2-all at 15:19.

Both teams battled back and forth to take the lead and at one point Fernie had a two-man advantage but could not capitalize on it and the game went into overtime.

Only 1:45 into the extra frame Princeton took the win with a goal scored by Brett Van Riper. Assists went to Kyle L'Arrivee and Anthony Leardo.

Not only were fans treated to an excellent game of fast hockey full of quick moves and bursts of speed skating, the contest was fast in running time lasting just over two hours from opening face-off to the goal scored in overtime.

Shots on goal: Princeton 34, Fernie 22. Final score: Princeton 3, Fernie 2 (OT).

Minor Hockey action

Posse clip Eagles wings

Valley First Princeton Posse hosted Sicamous Eagles Saturday, October 20th in their only match up in the Similkameen this season with the realignment of the league structure. In the past, Sicamous used to be a frequent visitor to Princeton, and a tough opponent.

The Eagles looked pretty good on ice, while the Posse appeared a little tired and disoriented, although both teams played a good game. Sicamous opened the scoring at 2:47 to set the tone for the rest of the match.

Princeton's first goal came on the power play at 9:09 when Kyle L'Arrivee fed the puck in front of the Sicamous goal to Brooks Christensen who crossed the ice from the glove side, took a shot, which was stopped by the goalie, then managed to get his stick on the rebound which inched past the goalie's outstretched stick and skipped along the ice into the corner of the net.

Returning veteran Jeremy Wagner, in his second game back in a Posse jersey, also received an assist.

At 15:20 Princeton took the lead with a fast goal by Taylor Stuart, with assistance from Kellin Brown and Brad Goss.

Only 24-seconds later Princeton widened the gap with a power play goal by Tyler Martin who's goal was the result of a rebound that went right to him.

Assists on the play went to Anthony Leardo and Brett Van Riper.

The second period saw Princeton looking better than they started, and they continued to dominate the game scoring their fourth goal at 6:04 (Wade Masch from Dan Hillman and Cody Sutherland) and a fifth goal, a power play goal, at 8:26 (Garrett Pfiefer from Taylor Stuart and Anthony Leardo).

Sicamous finished the period with a goal at 17:01.

The third period was all Princeton and the twenty minutes sailed by without any further scoring.

Shots on goal: Princeton 26, Sicamous 20. Final score: Princeton 5, Sicamous 2.
